Wine of the Month June

We have prided ourselves for many years on our wine list which is acknowledged to be one of the top ten in Scotland, with over 400 bins. Our wine merchants, Corney & Barrow, have been supplying the hotel for over 25 years.

Picking your wine from such an extensive list of choices can be a treat for wine lovers and connoisseurs, but maybe overwhelming for others, which is why we endeavour to make it easier for you by selecting a wine of the month.

This month’s rather exciting wine is our Sancerre, Domaine De La Grande Maison, 2013:

Sancerre

Who doesn’t love a great Sancerre? The home of Sauvignon Blanc and the place where it becomes a messenger to distribute the flavours of the earth in which it grows. This wines offers the classic Sancerre characters: Pale, lime colour robe with an intense citrus nose. Round and powerful wine with a great acidity.
Gooseberry characters with a steely mineral elegance from this tiny single vineyard. Refreshing and crisp on the palate with asn elegant, clean finish

“Pale, lemon green color, with a pronounced citrus intensity. The nose is dominated by lychee, grapefruit and peach aromas; rich and well-rounded in the mouth, shows a crisp and lengthy finish. Classic.” Vigneron (winemaker)

Serving suggestions & food pairing: Pair this sophisticated Sancerre with spring and summer faire like salad greens and other intense ingredients like capers, tomatoes, and vinaigrettes. Sautéed white fish, oysters, smoked salmon, and lighter foods flavored with fresh herbs all work well with the Sauvignon Blanc grape. It is classic with goat’s milk cheeses especially those from the Sancerre region such as Chavignol and Chèvre. We believe an afternoon picnic is not complete without a chilled bottle of Sancerre. Enjoy!

Redrawing The Election Map

Election Free Zone Map Redrawn

The wave of publicity which followed our announcement earlier this week drew one important observation: The map published at the election free zone page suggests that parts of Scotland north of the Great Glen, the Western and Northern Isles are not experiencing a general election. “Why…” asked the caller, “…have you not circled the North of Scotland?” She also insisted that we answer the question, “Will you put this right?” Yes or No?  (gosh that sounds familiar doesn’t it?) Shhh! Listen!

Election Free Zone

The Election Free Zone

For the next few weeks there are no politicians in parliament.  Which makes it a comparatively quiet place for a change.

Instead, all those politicians are among us.  They’re squirming on the TV, talking louder on the radio, getting misquoted in the newspapers and committing gaffes on your High Street.  As journalists and media presenters do their best to hold the politicians accountable, so these same politicians do their best to get re-elected without actually answering any awkward questions.

The result is 24 hour coverage of lots of people shouting at each other.

When you’ve had enough, there is an alternative.
